The “I AM” Statements of Jesus Christ

By Pastor Bill Monroe ·

About this sermon

Seven times in the Gospel of John, Jesus declared, “I AM.” What do these remarkable words reveal about the One who spoke them? When God appeared to Moses at the burning bush, He identified Himself as the great “I AM”—the eternal, ever-present God. Centuries later, Jesus used those same words to declare His own deity, and then gave seven familiar illustrations to help us understand who He is and what He offers. He is the Bread of Life who satisfies our spiritual hunger, the Light of the World who reveals the truth, the Door through whom we receive salvation, and the Good Shepherd who leads, knows, and loves His sheep. He is the Resurrection and the Life, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and the True Vine from whom we draw our spiritual strength. Each declaration brings us face-to-face with the wonderful person of Jesus Christ. And each reminds us that the deepest needs of the human soul can only be met through Him. As we examine these seven statements, we are challenged not simply to learn more about Jesus, but to draw closer to Him and love Him more deeply. Do we really love the Savior who has done so much for us? Scripture: John 20:30–31; John 6–15 Series: Believe and Live — The Gospel of John
