The Righteousness of God (#25) Paul, acting as God's Prosecutor, has presented evidence that every single person has broken God's law, is guilty, under God's condemnation and facing His wrath. 1. Leaves us HELPLESS AND HOPELESS. 2. Useless to talk about "coming to Christ" if we are still holding on to some idea that we can make ourselves acceptable to God by anything we do... B. Verse 2. Then the words: "BUT NOW..." (There is HOPE AND HELP.) I. GOD IS RIGHTEOUS (Romans1:17, 3:21,22) A. Definition: Righteousness is "the state of being right" - moral perfection 1. Describes God's Nature: as fire is hot, ice is cold, day is light, night is dark.... B. God Demands Righteousness: In Heaven everything is virtuous, flawless, holy 1. If we were to go to heaven as we are, heaven would become like earth. 2. - "Except your righteousness exceed the...." C. - "Seek first....HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS (Priority of life) II. RIGHTEOUSNESS APAT FROM THE LAW (Verse 21) A. Verse 21- note the phrase"righteousness without the law..." 1. This separates Christianity from all other religions: man seeks to become acceptable by God by his own efforts - obeying God's law's, good deeds, living a moral life, observing ceremonies and rituals 2. Christianity teaches that man's best efforts can never make him acceptable B. , 4 III. RIGHTEOUSNESS OBTAINED BY FAITH A. - "Abraham believed God and it was counted unto him for righteousness 1. "Faith" - Hearing God's Word, Believing God's Word and Leaving the rest to Him. 2. "Counted unto Him" - means credited unto Him (Bookkeeping term) B. - He makes us righteous by crediting us with righteousness of Jesus IV. RIGHTEOUSNESS IS PROVIDED BY GOD HIMSELF (verse 22 - "unto all and upon all") A. If a visitor came from outer space and asked? "What is Christianity?" 1. Christianity is how the Creator of the Universe, can take a sinful human, redeem them from sin, provider them with His own righteousness, give them a new nature and take them to a perfect heaven. B. How God provides RIGHTEOUSNESS: pictured as a robe or garment God provides. 1. Isa. 64:6 - Even our righteousness is as filthy rags in God's sight 2. Isa 61;10 "garments of salvation," and "robes of righteousness..." 3. The prodigal son a. Repentance: "Father, I have sinned... "Humility: "I am not worthy..." b. Verse 22: "...bring the best robe..."
