Jesus, the Humble Servant John 13:1–17

About this sermon

On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus Christ gave His disciples one of the most unforgettable lessons of His earthly ministry. He rose from supper, laid aside His garments, took a towel and a basin of water, and began washing their feet. The Creator was washing the feet of His creation. The King of Kings had taken the position of the lowest servant. In this message from John 13:1–17, we examine Christ's extraordinary example of humility and His call for every believer to serve others. Jesus teaches us that greatness in God's kingdom is not measured by position, authority, or recognition. It is measured by our willingness to serve. We also discover five ways Christian service transforms our lives: it is essential to discipleship, creates empathy, develops humility, demonstrates love, and leads to genuine happiness. The Lord concludes His lesson with a remarkable promise: "If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them." (John 13:17) Knowing God's Word is important, but the blessing comes when we put His Word into practice. No Christian is too important to serve, and every Christian has an opportunity to serve. This message is part of Believe and Live, a sermon series on the Gospel of John.
