The Man Who Had Everything That Amounted to Nothing

He seemed to have everything anyone could want—wealth, youth, position, respect, morality, sincerity, and a concern for spiritual things. Yet when the young ruler came running to Jesus, he revealed that none of those things had brought peace to his soul. His question was the right one: “What shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” Jesus loved him and gave him the truth he needed. But when Christ exposed the idol occupying his heart, the young man faced a decision. He could surrender what he valued most and follow Christ—or walk away. He came to the right Person, for the right reason, asked the right question, and received the right answer. But he made the wrong decision. The story of the rich young ruler forces us to ask a question of our own: Is there anything in my heart that I love, trust, or value more than God?
